YEAR OF ESTABLISHMENT
The Department of Commerce was started in 1956 by the founder members of the college.
The Department of Commerce was first headed by Prof. B. R. Subba Rao, a stalwart in the field of Commerce who was also responsible for bringing Commerce to Bangalore University.
The Department has been headed by the following persons during the previous five years:

ACTIVITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT
1. FESTS
CHAKRAVYUH
Chakravyuh, an inter-collegiate annual Commerce and Management fest is conducted by the staff and students of the Department of Commerce every year. This was started by us during the academic year 1999-2000. This event draws participants from a large number of colleges in and around Bangalore. 8 events relating to business are organized which are spread over 2 days.
PARIVARTHAN
Parivarthan is an annual inter class commerce fest organized to give an opportunity to our students to hone their skills in facing the competitive business world. This is a College level version of Chakravyuh. The second year B.Com students organize this fest and its events in areas like Marketing, Human Resources etc, Business quiz is also a regular event. These students gain experience in organizing and organize the larger event Chakravyuh when they come to their Final year B.Com.
2. FIELD VISIT:
Industrial Visit
The Department organizes industry visits to give its students, a practical exposure to the concepts which we teach in the classroom. This visit was organized at the coach body building and reconditioning division of KSRTC situated at regional workshop Kengeri on February 14th 2015

STUDY VISIT TO ORION SHOPPING MALL
This study visit was organized to bring a practical exposure about retailing in the present retail industry sector. The main objective of this study visit was to relate the concept of retailing in today’s retail scenario. his visit was of great use to the students of First Bcom, as retail management is one of the core subjects. During the visit students were asked to identify the different types of store retailing formats in the shopping mall and also relate various concepts of retailing.This event was organized on 9th March 2015.

MEETING WITH COMPANY SECRETARY
This meeting was scheduled on 6th October 2015 for I year B.Com students to give the practical knowledge about the company incorporation which is the part of the core subject – Corporate Administration. Mr. Srinivas, Company Secretary, Britannia gave the clear picture on the company incorporation with practical exposure. He explained about the INC forms, Digital signature, MOA, AOA, SIN, DIN Incorporation Certificate etc. The students were active with their queries and were able to relate with the subject which was useful to them.

3. COMPETITIONS:
COMMERCE EXHIBITION
“VANIJYA VEDI”- The land of commerce, the commerce Exhibition, is conducted by the Department of Commerce. The objective behind conducting this exhibition was to enhance and expose the communication, presentation and managerial skills of our students and also to create a platform to showcase Commerce related aspects to all others of non-Commerce field. The exhibits touched various aspects of commerce such as the stock market, banking, finance, transportation, foreign trade, monetary system etc. This event was organized on 18th and 19th of September 2014.

4. LECTURE SESSIONS AND PRESENTATIONS:

Lecture-cum interactive session on professional opportunities for chartered accountants

The talk was organized to familiarize the students about the “Professional opportunities for Chartered Accountants”. The speaker for the day was C A Pavan Kumar R.S.This was conducted on 3rd September 2014

Guest lecture on case study methodology
The talk was organized to familiarize the students about case study methodology. Case study methodology is widely used for classroom teaching in most of the B-schools. The speaker for the day was Prof. Sharon K Jose. PGDBA, CFA, (PhD) working with IBS Bangalore (ICFAI) for the past 12 years. IBS are pioneers in case study based method of Teaching and are the single largest contributor of Business cases for The Case Center (Formerly European Case Clearing House).

A presentation on the union budget 2015-2016

The department has started a tradition during this academic year of organizing an activity related to the union budget soon after its presentation in the parliament by the union finance minister, this tradition was suggested by Mr.Krishna Kumar Vice President MES Institution Bangalore.The tradition started of with an analytical presentation of the important aspects of the budget by the following students – Pooja Bhurat, Roshni.R and Sheetal Jain of 3rd B.Com ‘B’ section. The Commerce Department has plans to make this activity more formal and on a large scale in future.

5. BULLETIN BOARD:
The Department publishes a Commerce Magazine every year to show case the activities of the Department and also to provide an opportunity to the Commerce students to exhibit their literary talents. The magazine is called ABHIGYAAN
